Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was an American landscape painter and one of the founders of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Cole studied painting with his father, an amateur artist, and later with renowned American artist Washington Allston. In 1825, he traveled to Europe, where he was influenced by the work of J.M.W. Turner and other Romantic landscape artists.

Cole's work is characterized by its use of soft focus, warm colors, and a poetic evocation of nature. He often depicted scenes from American life, including the rugged coastline of Maine, where he spent much of his life.
