He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and studied at the McMicken School of Design in Cincinnati. He later studied under Thomas Satterwhite Noble and Carl Marr, and then with Fernand Cormon in Paris. Potthast is best known for his paintings of people at leisure in Central Park, and on the beaches of New York and New England.
