Antonietta Brandeis

Antonietta Brandeis (1848-1926) was a Czech-born Italian landscape, genre, and portrait painter, as well as a painter of religious subjects for altarpieces. Born in Miskowitz, Bohemia, she lost her father at an early age and moved to Prague with her widowed mother. Brandeis began studying painting with the Czech artist Karel Javůrek in Prague. Later, she enrolled in the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1872 with a number of honors and a Premio award in landscape painting.

Brandeis specialized in relatively small-scale paintings of landmarks in her adopted city, Venice. She became part of a community of expatriate artists who shared her interest in the city's cultural history and architecture. Her work is characterized by its detailed depiction of the intricate Renaissance architecture and the use of bright Italian sunlight to create a sense of immediacy.
